So I thought I'd try making an alpha release since I've never done all
the steps involved before.

Ends up it's quite painful.

I've now run out of time (and energy) to work on this, so here's a set
of patches:

which really don't look like much, but when you have to keep iterating
to find the *next* error it becomes quite tedious.

I think we need to do a few things:

 * Get a new 3.3 release out there (possibly call it 3.3.0?)
 * Streamline the tests so that it's easier for everyone to run them
   before submitting patches
 * Streamline the release process
 * Release *waay* more often :)
