FYI, this is on a Debian unstable system. I downgraded openssh-client from the latest (4.3p2-9) to 4.3p2-6, and then the git-push worked. This is not the first time I've had trouble with post-4.3p2-6 openssh, but I confess I haven't yet tried to diagnose the problem.
