For optimal filesystem performance (and best user experience) on soft/hard RAID arrays, flash devices, SSDs etc, partitions need to be aligned.
In absence of a reliable way to get information from the kernel, it strikes me as being a safe way to align partitions to (eg) a 1MB boundary (like in MS Windows 7 and Server 2008) by default for devices > eg 512MB...certainly it may big step up from the 63-sector default alignment on DOS disk labels. There will be opportunity to add 'smarter' alignment when kernel interfaces and vendors mature, but this will take time. What objections are against this?
