Did we try a BLKPG ioctl on it? Definitely we need parted to be able to view and manipulate partitions on these types of devices. Whether we go as far as automatically notifying the kernel of changes (by whatever means is appropriate for the type of device), I am less sure - it seems like a "nice to have", but there are some nasty complications to deal with (e.g. differing conventions for naming partitions on these devices exist).
