Which gmane web interface? it has several. I think the ordinary gmane interface (article.gmane.org) is awful, but I do like the thread.gmane.org one. The point here is that you need to distinguish between an archive and the user interface. I believe we can use patchwork as the UI to a back end archive, and it's not impossible (except for all the extra installation and maintenance on the admins) to run more than one front end to an archive.
