This series introduces a few different "configuration" definitions, ie. a certain combination of dependencies people may be interested in. virtualenv allows to easily setup those configurations and provide isolation from the system-wide python packages.
I'm not sure how important it is to test with older versions of django considering how easy it is to run a server with virtualenv to select a specific django version.
