The main reason I wanted it is to gauge the versions that various sites are running. I can roughly tell from looking at them now, but it would be good to be able to link reports of issues with a specific version numbers. I included the Git additions to ensure people using versions with local modifications wouldn't be reporting issues that don't exist in the unmodified version. AFAIK, Django itself works very similarly if you install directly from Git.
