M, I'm also in the UK.
Although I've not attended I'm aware of EUSecWest http://eusecwest.com/ held in London which happened in May. Its run by the same people that bring you CanSecWest. It seems to have had some interesting talks by people like Charlie Miller and Joanna Rutkowska. I need to make a conscious effort to check it out and see what its like. Did anyone go? I'm definitely going to save up my pennies and head to Defcon next year.
