Cached credentials do work for logins too as well as unlocking, so you can get in when not on the network. This kind of makes sense, if you're not on the network you either use the cached info or you just don't get in. You won't be able to access network resources after plugging the cable back in though since you'll then have to authenticate. Dunno if that alone locks you out locally though...
