In the not-for-nothing category ... depending on the school not having _the school_ have " direct control who has access to the data or is able to protect my son's information" is probably a bonus ;) not to disrespect the hard working admins that run school networks some of the schools I have worked with have top of the line network security and others have bottom of the barrel. Without knowing specifics on the school in question and what their IT budget looks like after the next round of budget cuts it may not be as bad a security proposition as you fear.
