PAC president Letlapa Mphahlele is livid after a farm school principal in Free
State turned down an offer from business people to set up a trust fund, library
and a computer centre.

Mphahlele sent a delegation of PAC members and several business people to speak
to the principal, Danny Wilkens, of Gelukwarts school in Naledi district last
Thursday .
Mphahlele was exposed to the poor conditions at the school when he was touring
the farms last week in preparation for the by- elections in the district.
In keeping with the call of devoting 67 minutes of their time to community
service to mark the years Nelson Mandela spent in politics, Mphahlele mobilised
business people to help the school. “I was honouring the call and since the PAC
has declared 2010 the year of community service, we wanted to make a
contribution, but the behaviour of the principal was disappointing.”

Wilkens, however, denied that he turned down the offer . He told Sowetan that
when the PAC arrived on Thursday he was not at school and was told by staff
members that the party wanted to address the pupils . “They wanted to address
pupils, and I am not going to allow that to happen at the school.”

Department of education spokesperson Haward Ndaba said the PAC was denied
access to the school because they did not follow “correct procedures”.
