Cde Khangela Please do go ahead and arrange a session with Magubane. I have worked with Bra Pedro before when Skotaville published his 'June 16 Soweto' book of photos in the 80s, with Sir Tom Hopkinson doing the layout and design: the two were colleagues at Drum in the early years of their carreers. I also understand the professional rivalry but at this stage it shouldn't be an issue. We are collecting pictures from a wide range of photographers, including Ralph Ndawo and others, and will certainly look at lots more from newspaper photo libraries and individual's collections. I'm excited that you've come across Ben Arnold's artwork on Sobukwe. Hlatswayo, an artist in Mofolo in the neighborhood where the Sobukwes lived, did several paintings on Prof. I am also looking out for a poster drawing with the portraits of Lembede, Mda, Sobukwe and Mothopeng together. Ben Arnold is one of the top artists in the country, and once made public this work will be a powerful statement on the identification of a patriotic hero of the African people by a leading artist. We will also need letters with Prof's hand writing from his students friends and so on. Izwe Jaki

If you would like to view them I can arrange a session with Magubane. I think he is worth including in the book if he agrees. We will have to manage rivalry among this generation of photographers. I suggest you also consider including other forms of reimaging Sobukwe that have emerged over the years. That is, a selection of well designed posters. There are two in particular that I have seen. One is a black and white poster to commemorate the 10th anniversary of his passing on. (I have a copy of the latter) and another is a colour poster on Sobukwe highlighting his imprisonment in the 1960s. This poster is part of PAC archives at Oxford University in the UK. I have also come across a painting of Sobukwe by Ben Arnold. Read the body language: Sobukwe is in charge of the conversation and they are all focused on him. There are other pic never before used from the same event. Mdu, Sobukwe was imprisoned by the SA parliament (Sobukwe Clause) to prevent his release from a 3 year sentence after leading the Positive Action Campaign. He was not a uniformed prisoner on RI - they isolated him from others and kept him in a house (hovel, rather). He could not negotiate with anyone for his release - because he did not have to. With Dinilesizwe Sobukwe and Alf Khumalo primarily, we are collating photos for a pictorial biography of Mangaliso Sobukwe. We'll publish the coffee table book possibly in a year from now. Clearly, there's a need for us to hurry up the project.
