Nomaxesi Valencia Mgweba (54),Acting Area Commissioner and Area
Coordinator Corrections(Deputy Director) with 31 years of service in
the Department of Correctional Services said: “heads are going to roll
here, no stone will be left unturned, following an intensive ‘high
level’ investigation. To find out how a 9mm pistol (firearm) with a
loaded magazine of 15 live rounds of ammunition disappeared from a
locked firearm safe.
The unbelievable mysterious incident allegedly happened last week
Thursday morning during change of shifts at Baviaanspoort medium
correctional centre near Tshwane. The following day a special high
level formidable security team of Gauteng Emergency Support Team(EST),
explosive dogs together with their handlers and student correctional
service officials conducted impromptu mass search. To seize and raid
missing firearm.
“We acted swiftly in an effort to ensure an environment in which the
safety of inmates, officials and visitors is a priority. To show
offenders and officials that prison is a high top classified sensitive
security institution,” said Mgweba.
“We are in control of the situation only three blades of dagga and few
contraband discovered during a raid,” Mgweba explained.
Offenders are kept active participating in rehabilitation
programmers’, thereby affording them less time to contemplate escapes
and other wrong doings.
In view of the seriousness of what happened. Only two officials Daniel
Chronelous Vanzyl (Member in charge-night shift) and Mandla
Mashiya(Arsenal Controller) were suspended on Monday this week,
pending outcome of investigations,” She explained.
“The matter is still subjudicare, pending high level investigation
outcome report expected to point out clearly what, when, how and who”,
She added.
Mgweba said zero tolerance stance and tough disciplinary action will
be taken against perpetrators to be found guilty of wrong doing.
A fire arm negligence and theft cases were opened with Kameeldrift,
South African Police Service (SAPS) to investigate and arrest those
involved.
