The school downsizing project is a national call which is unmercifully
implemented by DA at Western Cape to target our currently disadvantaged
schools (I am not subscribed to “Historically Disadvantaged Schools since
we are still suffering). Unfortunately, the self-proclaimed organization of
the people (anc) had created and secured DA favorable conditions to spit on
our schools. The so called South African School Act and National
Guidelines for the Rationalization of Small or Non-viable Schools sets some
criteria for a school to be recognized as a fully fledged school.

However, public consultation should take place before the actual
implementation and there should be workable mitigation processes before
exploring the school closure which is the last option after tireless effort
to improve the standards of our local schools. Lack of resources, unstable
structures (if there is one), over-crowded classrooms, overloaded teachers
and small human capacity to handle volumes of learners are some of the key
features which needs immediate attention and are the sole causes of
learners poor performance at our schools. To close school without firstly
addressing the roots causes is like taking an emergency exit out of
unbearable conditions our learners, school governing bodies and teachers
finds themselves into. They need to close the running water from a tap
before drying the floor with a mop. I Pause
