By Thomo Nkgadima She started teaching learners with thorn clothes sewing and giving food parcels to the needy kids of Nwa Vangani Primary school in Mamelodi outside Pretoria. Gogo Virginia Nkomo(64), a mother of two children. Now uses her pension grand money to make a difference to the lives of the less fortunate. She was touched one of the good days when she saw young kids wearing mutilated and thorn clothes. She did not sleep a peaceful sleep that night until she decided to do something that will make a difference. Since then she soldiered on and never turned back! She learned the skill from her mother some years ago. For the past eight years Gogo Nkomo teach learners of grade R to grade 7 on Monday morning and Fridays for about an hour without any reward. She also spend her time preaching the word of God to kids at the school.She is a spiritual leader an Evangelist. She is also spending her pension grand to buy sewing material and food parcel to feed the poor kids. She said: " I am happy that they will be able to clothe themselves in future using the skill I impart on them". According to the school principal Rodney Nkwinika learners would not bother to buy new clothes unnecessary as they are empowered with sewing skills to make their own clothes and fix those of my siblings. He said : "It will make sense that our learners cannot focus in the classroom with empty stomach". About the outstanding contribution Gogo Nkomo make to his school the principal explained : "We believe she is also God send, she contribute to the well-being of our learners providing them clothes and food parcels. She is also giving spiritual guidance and moral support during our morning assembly". The school was established in 1973 after the Zulu and Tsonga speaking people fought for the establishment of the school. it is a Tsonga name meaning Fighting! Now the school is having 490 kids and 16 staff members. Dakalo Sello(9) grade 9 learner said : " I am excited, I could sew my own clothes this days and mend old ones". Gogo she is known by many in Mamelodi as Mma Nkomo for her charity work including community spiritual work as a lay woman preacher.
