Aman, I pulled my Archos jb6000 out of the closet, and decided to try rockbox, so I found your message in my archives. I followed the instructions you gave in another message, and now have talking menus, folders, and file names. I was absolutely blown away by what these guys have done. My interest in the Archos units is now rekindled and I think I would like to buy one of the newer units with a larger hard drive.
In your message above you mentioned a recorder v2 and that it had a different form factor. Can you describe this unit, and what the form factor is like? Does it have a lithium battery, or were they still using nimh back then? I know they are older units, so I am not sure what I will be able to find, but I'll try Ebay. Which of those units is reported to be the better sounding one? Any info you can provide to set me off on a hunt for a nice unit will be appreciated. These RockBox guys are awesome. I am definitely going to contribute something via their PayPal link. ' Subject: RE: Archos and Rock Box Hi, Don. Rockbox is doing great things with the Archos units. They have just put in accessible menus, and are working on speaking directory names and other things on the screen. Rockbox is firmware for the Archos units, and is free to the user. The archos units may be purchased at many computer stores. Note that only the Archos player, known as the Jukebox, the Archos recorder, and the Archos FM recorder work with Rockbox. The Archos AV units, which play video, don't work with Rockbox. The Archos units are available from many places, online from Ebay and Amazon, offline from many computer stores. The cost ranges anywhere from $75 to $300, depending upon whether you want a used or new unit, a player or a recorder, and what size of hard drive you need. Two notes are worth making about buying an Archos unit. First, the quality control is said to be bad. If the unit works out of the box, it works well, and usually continues to work well. However, make sure you have some sort of return policy if you get a unit that doesn't work well. Secondly, it might be an idea to get a player or recorder, rather than an FM recorder or a recorder V2. The latter units have no replaceable batteries. That is, the battery pack is built into the machine and cannot be modified by the user. This may make life difficult on longer trips. If mobility for extended periods is important to you, you should buy a recorder or player. If you value the FM radio present on the FM recorder, or the form of the recorder V2, which is different from the one for the standard recorder, you might like to get those units. Now, once you have your archos, you can get the Rockbox firmware from http://rockbox.haxx.se There are versions for all the Archos units I mentioned. You'll need to get the instructions for instituting talking menus and talking directories. These require some files which you can get from the web. If such instructions are needed, you can either write to me or to the Rockbox development list, subscription information for which is on the Rockbox site. Good luck. I want to know if there are working prototypes or whether the Rock Box is still strictly an idea. Since we know that the Apple Ipod is not accessible, I hope to find something comparable which is accessible. Thanks.
