The unit is one unit. If you buy a recorder, the unit records and
plays. If you buy a player, the unit only plays.

There are ten buttons on the recorder units, 6 on the player. Yes,
the buttons are usable. This is not the touch-sensitive Ipod, but is like
any other device with buttons.
