Hi Brian, try making adjustments to the volume of the tape recorder
This will effect it if you're for example using an earphones socket to
do the recording.  if you can, take it to the max you can without
introducing distortion.  If you're using a tape deck, then the output
level from the deck may be adjustable.  Also if there's a tape type
selector switch on the tape player, try moving that.  I can't think
why it would be happening from radio though, unless the recording
level is set too low, and you said you'd tried messing with that.
