Hi Rob, first, it's an explorer problem, you should have the space that you have calculated. It can't easily calculate the free space on a removable disk, because it can't calculate the size of the disk without formatting it, and CDR's and so on are already formatted. There are different sizes of CD's. Your hard disk, on the other hand, will have been formatted by your system. It doesn't explain why you are told the free space left on a floppy disk, (if indeed you are), but that's the answer I got from Microsoft when I asked the same question.
Second, can't comment on the visual shading on the back of the disk, however it could be an optical illusion, if indeed it's got any relevance at all. You do have approximately 547MB free, however you could possibly, not sure, loose some space as the disk probably burns in cluster sizes, though this is small enough to be irrelevant.
