to set your preferences you need to hit F11. There are many tabs that you can set. One is for the volumeof the sound source. If you have the line from your stereo in the line in, then you will have to have line in checked in this tab. There are other tabs where you can choose the default way you want to save your files, etc. There is one for recording. I would recommendchecking the unbounded checkbox. This will let you record as long as needed rather than be limited by the time you set in the new file dialog box.
