Firstly! ensure that your on-board sound device is enabled in the computers CMOS, and its best if you're using Windows XP as it supports multiple sound devices, when the computer is booted both sound devices should be detected automatically by windows.
You can then select through the Sounds option in the Control Panel which device your system will use for playback, recording and voice. Most applications such as Sound Forge, Winamp etc will let you select which devices they input from or output to.
