Susan! Any onboard sound card or most any inexpensive $20-$100 sound
card should be fine for software speech. The choice of the other card
depends on what you want to do with it audiowise. Most people would be
happy with any sound card bought in any department store but there are
specialized cards for specific music and audio work. The sky is the limit.
I sell one that cost $1,000 and there are more expensive ones. They don't
sound any better, they just do different things. Incidentally, digital to
analogue conversion is very well understood and good converters are
available in the most inexpensive cards so don't get talked into spending a
lot of money for a specific card because someone told you it sounded better.
They all sound great.
Most of the time I just use one sound card. It's an Edirol UA-3FX.
It's a USB device and I let it do software speech, audio recording, music
playback, my VCR goes through it, Skype and everything else.
