Try the obvious. Instead of alt-p try tabbing to preview and using the spacebar. See if it does the same thing. Also before going into the processes at all, play your file by pressing spacebar in SF andsee if you hear anything.
Let me know what happens in each case.

You have to have a file with a pitch to be shifted.

Hi Jerry. When I do alt c in Soundforge and then find p, it does give me a choice of bend or shift. I choose shift. I press enter. Then, soundforge gives me a dialogue saying, "The selected function requires data to process. The sound 1 file contains no data. Okay?" I press spacebar. I do alt p, but it still goes into process, instead of preview. There's something Soundforge is not allowing me to do.

the audio processing dialogues, Pitch Shift for example. When you're in the
main Sound Forge window alt-p will give you Process.
