You wil be asked to keep your contact list and preferences when uninstall skype. When installing the new version you will have the same preferences set and you will have your contact list. If you are running windows xp then take a copy of the directory drive\documents and setting\your username\application data\skype. Then you will have a baackup for your contact list. You can only copy if skype is unloaded. If ever need to reinstall your system you just need to copy the skype directory back to the position from wich you make the copy. Skype can also be installed on top of older versions. This way also keeps your contacts and settings.

Hey Folks,

I have a previous version of Skype. It was the version that came out
last week. 1.0.0.94. Of course, version 97 is now out.

I want to know if anyone knows if doing a clean install of new
versions of Skype is necessary or if Skype users generally install
their new versions directly over the top of the old ones?

I am not a fan of the latter method, however, I see no way to save my
contact lists. If anyone can tell me how to do a fresh install of
Skype, and at the same time, save my contact list, I would truly be
appreciative...
