The antennas are small, yes, not a dish; I have both of them in my window. I have the boombox receiver in my bedroom and an antenna in the bedroom window. Both windows face the same direction. I don't know if they are south windows, but I do know that the signal is being received properly, and oh, yes, the screens are plastic. Metal screens would interfere.
