Then it must have a small audio card in it to decode the digital stream to
analogue, as it leaves your sound card out of the stream all together.

you sure can. in transmission wise, exactly the same as plugging a conventional fm transmitter directly into your sound card, so music you transmit will be transmitted directly from the USB port to any radio within a 150 feet range.
