Greetings!
I'm sure we all remember the Sony walkmans cassette player? Well you would have thought that Sony's dominance in this feeld would have continued into the computer age, apparently not.
I've just read about Sony's new product which they claim will rival the Apple Ipod, if Sony truly believe that the IPOD is threatened by the new Sony wonder then I suggest they think again.
It is accepted as "STANDARD PRACTISE" these days that the consumer should be able to download MP3 files and transfer them to a portable device (as MP3 files) but Sony's new walkman player doesn't follow this simple principle, you need to use the supplied software to take the MP3's from your computer, transfer them to the walkman unit and then have them converted to Sony's ATRAC compression system. Yes, you can transfer MP3 files to the walkman units hard drive leave them there but that won't do you any good as they cannot be played in native MP3 mode, what an absolute waste of time.
Conversion takes 3 minutes per file so speed is a big problem here, with the Apple IPOD, its just a matter of using the ITUNES software supplied to transfer the MP3 files from your PC or download them from the net, that's the end of the process and they're ready to be played instantly.
Another problem with the new Sony Hard Drive walkman is power, the only way this beast can be powered is from its power cradle which plugs into the AC mains outlet, the IPOD can be powered in a variety of ways including from a computers USB port but none (to my knowledge) have car adaptors available.
