With MAD, you can have it normalise as the MP3's are playing. If you use LAME to encode your MP3 files, you can have LAME normalise them for you, (only works in the command line version as far as I'm aware).
Many of the portables I've seen can normalise upon playback though (if you normalise when ripping or encoding) this feature isn't necessary.
