The new HI-MD recorders from Sony will be able to play MP3s from Minidiscs directly. The files do not have to be converted to ATRAC anymore. However, nobody yet knows, whether one could just put the MP3s onto a Minidisc using a file manager. With the new Sony hard disk player NW-HD3, one has to use Sonic Stage even for MP3 files. On the other hand, Sony's multicodec CD players play regular MP3 CDs. Let's hope, that Sony gets it right for their new MD recorders:
