should this be an external hard drive concern

I just purchased an external hard drive. I have heard a lot of discussion of 
using an external hard drive for back up purposes. What I would like to do 
is use this drive to play my music files from, conserving space on my hard 
drive in the PC.
Now my question, are these drives meant for back up, or can I use it just as 
I would use my internal drive?
