Dana! CD quality, as far as I know, is defined by a sampling rate of
44.1 Kilohertz at 16 Bit, Stereo. Let's do the arithmetic:
44.1 Kilohertz times 16 Bits per Channel times 2 Channels equals
44,100 Samples per Second times 16 Bits per Channel times 2 Channels equals
44,100 Cycles per Second times 32 Bits equals
1,411,200 Bits per Second
Now:
1,411,200 Bits per Second times 1 Kilobit per 1024 Bits equals 1,378.125
Kilobits per Second
This is about ten times the bit rate of an MP3 playing at 128 KPBS.
I believe that Physics will support me in my opinion that a live
performance is playing at infinity KBPS. In theory, during a live
performance or in just regular hearing, an infinity of frequencies are
present at infinity bit depth and not only in two channel stereo but in an
infinity of sources.
I agree that the mind can only process a small part of this and the
ears can only hear a small part of this and that there are a host of other
influences, in fact an infinity of influences. I wouldn't even know how to
begin to come up with a figure here without knowing the problem to hand. In
understanding the problem lies the answer. There is no answer. The answer
is whatever serves to remedy the problem. Even when I listen to a CD I'm
only getting a very small part of the entire 1,378.125 KBPS.
