I usually use the duration feature, checking that box and then choosing the duration, just because it takes fewer keystrokes to do, but what you did to set the time is completely correct. I'm wondering if the connection could have dropped during the hour you were recording, such that only 52 minutes were actually recorded. I record 1-hour programs all the time and get the whole hour when I do.
