I just recently encountered this identical problem with Winamp. The trick is this: If you create a playlist (a .M3U file) and save it in the same directory where the files in it are, Winamp will not save the full path information in the .M3U file. However, after creating your playlist, if you save it to a different directory, such as the one you talked about creating with all the .M3U's in it, then Winamp includes the full path data to each media file in the .M3U playlist file. Short version: Create your playlists as you normally do, but save them to your special M3U directory, not to the directory where the music files are.
