this was the kim komando tip of the day for yesterday.

Play digital music throughout your house

Q. We have our XP computers on a wireless network. We'd like to play our
MP3s over the network. How can we stream MP3s to all the computers
simultaneously?
That would be great for holidays!

A. It is possible to play the same music throughout your house. It's a great
idea for parties. The only problem is deciding who gets to pick music for
the
family.

There are a few tools capable of streaming music to multiple rooms. They're
not cheap. But they're probably easier than non-computer setups. The average
home lacks room for a rack of amplifiers, cables and speaker sets.

Examples of music-streaming tools include
Squeezebox,
AirPort Express with AirTunes
and
SoundBridge.
Each lets you stream music from your hard drive to other rooms wirelessly.

These tools are designed to allow a computer to become a music server. The
computer streams to special wireless receivers. Finally, the receivers plug
into
ordinary sound systems. Computers capable of stereo input can also use the
receivers. Many PC soundcards provide these inputs.

These setups can quickly become expensive. For example, a single AirPort
Express with AirTunes receiver sells for $129. A Squeezebox receiver goes
for $299.
And for each SoundBridge receiver, expect to pay $150.

Since you're looking only to stream to computers rather than ordinary sound
systems, there may be a less expensive option. The maker of Squeezebox
offers
its software, SlimServer, as a free download. It's the software that allows
one of your computers to become a music server.

There is also a program called Softsqueeze that mimics a Squeezebox
receiver. It is available free on the
SourceForge Web site.
It can turn each of your networked computers into a virtual Squeezebox
receiver.
