I don't know about how much extra time, I just go for maximum compression. There is no decompression penalty.

Bruce,

Nothing but the time needed to compress? Well, how much time are we talking
about? If I rip a standard length CD, with the level 8 compression, how much
longer than I'm used to would it take to rip the Cd? Are we talking 5 or 10
extra minutes per CD, or hours, or what? And, what would most flac users
consider a "reasonable" compression level?

Finally, if a higher compression level takes longer to compress when I rip a
CD, is there any time-penalty when the file is decompressed during playback?

Thanks.

Blessed Be,

Dana

You're trading off the time needed to compress the file. Smaller file,
more time to compress, like a zip file.
