Hi Michael Ctrl and space should work, but if not, make sure you're in Edit Waveform mode - at the top of the view menu it will either give you the option of toggling between Multitrack view or Edit view - if you are in Multitrack view you may not record if you have not armed a track. In Edit waveform view you should be able to press ctrl and space or go to New in the File menu, bring up the dialog box with sample settings etc, press enter and you'll be recording.
If you wish to record while listening to other tracks you need to be in multitrack view. You must make sure that your track output for each track is the same place e. g. a soundcard channel, then you must go and arm the track you wish to record in. (Don't forget to make sure it's output channel comes through your soundcard too.) Now when you press ctrl and space or go through the menus you should be able to record on the selected tracks and hear a combination of the stuff already there and the new stuff you're recording.
