Thank you all so much for your helpful feedback.

One thing I neglected to ask:  If I work in Studio Recorder or any of the 
other software you all have suggested, I need to be able to then work on 
the same files with say SoundForge or Cooledit etc. which others in my 
radio collective might be using, as we share work on the same files.  I 
assume if I can make my files wave files, this transferring between 
programs could happen.  Is this true?
