Hi Richard. If you want to do line in recordings from cassette or turntable, be careful when choosing a USB sound source as the features do indeed vary. My first choice was the M-Audio card, one that is designed with a guitar input. It is a fine USB device. The problem is that the line in jack is mono. I've seen another USB card that offered no line in.
My situation is that I want to improve on the intel sound chip that came with my new computer, but it's manufacturer, MDG here in Canada, surprised me with a sticker that warns me not to remove it or I'll void the warranty. So I have to either pay an extra $90 to have them install any new PCI card that I might choose, void my warranty by breaking the sticker's seal or go with a USB card.
