I think using a small mixer would probably be a better solution than
chopping the stereo plug off of a pair of phones and putting 2 mono ones on.
This way, I can put it back to normal so others using the station I use at
other times of the day can hear through both ears when I put the computer
channel in the middle.

My other idea would be some sort of automatic A/B switch similar to what
they do in taverns to have the jukebox override the radio, but in my case,
the dictation overriding JFW. I think panning with a small mixer sounds
cheaper and easier as long as one could get something compact enough. This
is because as far as the info I gathered goes, automatic switches would need
some sort of external relay to make them act, not just based on the audio
signal.
