Hi Alison. I'm no expert with the ipods but it sounds like you may have corrupted the internal database with it going down during a transfer. I'd guess it's similar to other players and has a means of doing a hard reset. This is usually done by pressing certain keys to interrupt the start up of the player and then revealing a menu where you can re-format or clean the database. There may also be a small hole for inserting a paperclip to do the same job.
You'll need sighted assistance to do this but you may want to refer to your manual or the apple support pages first.
