For the record, I joined a couple mp3 files using the command line method, using the copy /b command, then opened the resulting file in winamp. Using the appropriate commands, winamp accurately reported on the elapsed time and time remaining, so at least in this case, the mp3 file wasn't too badly damaged by this procedure.
