Reed, As someone already mentioned, you might look at using Exact Audio Copy for ripping. EAC, as it is called, is kind of complicated to set up, but there are a lot of guides on the web for doing this. EAC may be the best program out there for ensuring that the best data possible is pulled in from the CD. It is completely usable with speech.
The data format you rip to is another issue. WMA lossless is one option, but FLAC and others are possible as well. As long as you start with a lossless format, you can convert later to anything else.
