You can do this to a limited degree with GW. I've used it several times to record vocals over prerecorded music tracks, for example. I did a five-voice jingle for my radio show, spreadi9ng the voices across the stereo spectrum. And I do all my own cross-fading manually on my show, so that requires Gold Wave's mixing ability. But you can't do multitrack recording. I assume everything I've mentioned is very doable in Sound Forge too.
