If you go into the open file dialogue of a player, you can scroll through the file types drop-down, and see all the types it will recognize and load. I found both m3u and pls lissted in the drop-down of both WMP and Realplayer. So long as you don't have Real Audio formatted sources pointed to, you should be able to play either a m3u or a pls playlist in either player. If there are real audio sources pointed to in either sort of playlist, of course, you'll have to play it in Realplayer.
