I can't answer your other questions, but as far as ripping, I use CDEX which 
is free.
You can download it from the audio page at:
www.blind-computing.com
I use version 1.51, and haven't had any problems with it.
Under the tips and tutorials section, you can find several tutorials on 
useing the program.
