Hi!
Since I last wrote on this subject I'm happy to say there have been
some excellent advances in the Audio Editing software on available
for the Mac, the unfortunate news is that (as far as I'm aware) the
good folk who develop Pro Tools have not yet seen fit to make their
product accessible, funny howe previous versions of this application
were extremely accessible under Mac OS 9 Classic but that's another
issue so we can only keep writing, hoping and praying.
I've spoken of the Sound Studio audio editor before, this has
undergone some significant upgrades in the last few months, one of
which is the added ability toe "cue/review" a file in a similar way
that Sound Forge does, use number 2 to fast forward and 1 to rewind.
Sound Studio has also incorporated more cursor movements to allow the
quick moving through a file and more commands to manipulate and
select sound data through shortcut commands from the keyboard.
Sound Studio gives you access to many effects and processes such as
pitch change, flange, faze, various graphic equalisers, noise
generation, delay etc so its a bit more than an audio editor but well
priced at $79.00
As a final note about Sound Studio, if multi track editing is your
thing then this software comes into its own with full milti track
editing support which is fully accessible. If you wish to find out
more about Sound Studio then visit http://www.feltip.com
Now if you're thinking of just a basic sound editor then Fission may
be more suited to you at $50.00 and when we're talking basic then
that's exactly what we're talking here, all Fission does is edit
audio but it does this task very well. Fission like sound Studio has
"Cue/Review" commands, the great thing here is that you can see
exactly where the play head is in the form of a time reading so you
can "split" a file at the touch of a keystroke, set a selection point
at the play head at the touch of a keystroke etc.
What Fission really has going for it in my view is that it can use
Cue Sheets for importing or exporting data, many CD Rippers on the
market today produce Cue sheets and such software includes Exact
Audio Copy, Easy CD DA extractor and Max Audio CD Ripper just to name
a few. A cue file is a simple text file that's produced along with a
Wave or FLAC file which contains the sound of the audio CD or audio
project, the Cue sheet contains information on the CD or Audio
project, at which points on the CD tracks begin and end, the names of
these tracks etc. Fission can act on these files so for example if
you had a cue and Wave file from a CD created by a ripper, you could
load them into Fission and have fission export the results in another
format, say MP3, ALAC, M4A, Aif etc.
Among Fissions other features are trim crop, normalise, smart split
(splits the file according to chages in audio level) etc. Fission
still lacks a little functionality such as a "go to" dialog box but
we're happy to say that the author of Fission seems to be very
contactable and open to suggestions so we're hoping that improvements
will be made to the software in the "not-to-distant" future.
As you can see, Fission is a very basic piece of software, its
actually designed to be used as part of a package, with other peices
of software such as Audio Hijack Pro, a multi purpose multi-function
piece of recording software which "hijacks" and records every
possible audio source on a Mac that you can think of, these sources
include the 2 ends of a Skype call and even Hidden applications
running in the background on a Mac which includes Voiceover, the
Screen Reading Software built-in to OS Tiger and the soon to be
released upgrade OS Lepard. Nicecast, a software application which
allows netcasting of various inputs and sources from your computer,
all these products are extremely accessible.
