Hi. VBR is recognised as the best way to rip to both maximise the sound quality while at the same time minimise the file size. If you set your lower limit to 128kbps and your upper limit to 320kbps and choose the highest quality then you won't hear any difference between that track and one ripped at 320kbps constant bitrate. You will though have a smaller file as the encoder will use what it needs to gain the best results. I use these settings when I'm producing mp3's for my portable player and typically the files come out at around the 256kbps mark. Less complex music may yield lower bitrates.
