If you start a recording and leave it alone and return to see how things are 
going, will it show you if you have clipped in the meantime?

  The metering for both play and recording are accessible in GoldWave.  You 
  will find the metering on the same line as the Play, Stop, Record, Pause 
  information, but over to the right of that information.

  When the Control key is pressed, the metering is updated and when the key is 
  released, the value reflects and holds the last reading.

  Actually, it is a simple thing to create a JAWS script to snapshot the 
  meters.

  I am corresponding with Chris, (the creator of GoldWave), to see if we can't 
  find a better working model.
