Do any of you remember a long, long time ago there was a DJ type package, not very accessible, that proposed itself as the be-all and end-all of DJ-ware? Well, it's still around, or, it's back, and it's wacky as hell! You can get a copy from www.virtualdj.com (current release is 5.0) and it comes with a 20-day free trial. Unfortunately, its accessibility hasn't improved except in two areas. The first is, every function the program has can be assigned to a shortcut key--every single one. That's the good news. The bad news is that, without some heavy JAWS scripting, you don't know what window you're in, and there are at least six you can focus on, including two turntable windows, a file browser, a configuratioin editor, a help window, and one or two others I haven't figured out yet!
With this program you can scratch, beat-match, loop, sample, reverse, something called reverse-spin, overlay samples on top of playing tracks, assign prerecorded sample effects to hot keys, loop by beat or create your own custom-length loop, record the whole live production to a file of virtually any audio type, and, get this, even broadcast your live production mixup mashup whatever-up, over the Internet to a Shotcast server!
