While use of its software isn't essential it does give you information you
wouldn't otherwise have.  The degree to which it's charged, a check for
updates feature, a read out on how much free space you have and the ability
to rip tracks directly to it.  so, it's not accurate to state there's no
need for it.

You really don't need any software  or JAWS scripts to use the zen stone, in
fact I really don't understand why people think this is necessary.  If you
have the one gig model, there is absolutely no need for any additional
software.  Simply use the USB cable to charge the unit when plugging it into
the USB port, a full charge of the battery takes about 3 to 4 hours.  After
that, you can simply copy and paste any music or audio books using
traditional copy and paste methods just like any other drive in windows
explorer.  It's a whole lot easier than a lot of people might think.
